#### Objectives:
- Students will identify key features and landmarks in their local area.
- Students will understand the concept of a community and various functions it serves.
- Students will learn how to navigate and create simple maps of their local area.
#### Materials Needed:
- Large paper map of the local area (or projector to display a digital map)
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- Drawing paper
- Photographs of local landmarks (printed or digital)
- Stickers/stamps for marking key locations on maps
- Question cards for discussion and activities
- "Worksheet: My Local Area" handout
- Some supplementary video clips (if technology permits)

#### Introduction (10 minutes):
1. **Greeting and Warm-up** (3 minutes)
- Begin with a warm-up discussion asking students if they know what "local area" means and who can name places they visit regularly.
2. **Objective Setting** (2 minutes)
- Explain the purpose of the lesson: to learn about the different parts of the local area and how they fit together.
3. **Show and Tell** (5 minutes)
- Show a few photographs of local landmarks (schools, parks, libraries, grocery stores, etc.).
- Ask students if they recognize these places and what they know about them.
#### Main Activity (40 minutes):
1. **Map Exploration** (10 minutes)
- Display a large map of the local area.
- Point out and mark key locations, such as the school, parks, libraries, and stores using stickers or markers.
- Ask students to come up and mark places they recognize.
2. **Discussion: Community Roles and Structures** (10 minutes)
- Discuss what a community is and why it is important.
- Explain the roles of different places (e.g., parks for recreation, shops for shopping, fire station for safety).
3. **Interactive Q&A** (5 minutes)
- Use pre-made question cards related to the local area for a quick interactive Q&A session.
- Example questions: "What do we do at the library?" "Can you name a place where you can buy groceries?"
4. **Map Drawing Activity** (15 minutes)
- Hand out drawing paper and markers/crayons.
- Ask students to draw their own map of their route from home to school or another commonly visited place.
- Encourage them to include as many landmarks as possible.
#### Conclusion (10 minutes):
1. **Show and Explain** (5 minutes)
- Allow students to share their maps with the class, explaining parts they drew and places on their route.
2. **Reflection and Review** (3 minutes)
- Recap what was learned about local areas, maps, and community roles.
- Ask students if they discovered any new places or if they have any questions.
3. **Homework/Extension Activity** (2 minutes)
- Give students the "Worksheet: My Local Area" handout to take home.
